Man of the Match : Hafeez

West Indies won the toss and decided to bat first against Pakistan in the first quarter-final of the ICC World Cup at the Sher-e-Bangla stadium in Mirpur on Wednesday.

Shahid Afridi picks up his fourth wicket, as West Indies is dismissed for 112.

Afridi has cleans up Ravi Rampaul (0) to ensure West Indies manage to play just 43.3 overs of their stipulated quota.

Hafeez: I thank God and the people back home. I have been working hard over the last couple of weeks and it has worked for me. The plan was made a couple of days ago, I also bowled with the new ball in the nets and I tried to bowl as straight as possible. The form has come in the right time and I would look to continue my batting performance. We made things very simple, not thinking far ahead, and that’s the key for our success. We will again take it, one game at a time.Hafeez is the Man of the Match for taking 2 wickets and for scoring a fifty.

Sahid Afridi: This has been a great performance, it is the best gift that I can give to the fans back home and to those who have travelled all the way. Each game, we make plans against the opposition and we stuck to our plans like always. The openers played really well today and took us home. I am trying my best to stick to a proper line and length. These were proper conditions for a spinner. I had promised the fans that we can make it to the semi-finals and we should take it game by game. Every team will come harder and we need to make plans for the next game. Against Australia, we tried Rehman and today we wanted to try Hafeez.

    West Indies:
Darren Sammy (captain), Devon Smith, Chris Gayle, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Darren Bravo, Kieron Pollard, Devon Thomas, Devendra Bishoo, Ravi Rampaul, Kemar Roach
    Pakistan:
Shahid Afridi (captain), Mohammad Hafeez, Kamran Akmal, Asad Shafiq, Younis Khan, Misbah-ul-Haq, Umar Akmal, Abdul Razzaq, Umar Gul, Wahab Riaz, Saeed Ajmal.

  • West Indies can put pressure by batting first

    0

Pakistan play West Indies in the Cricket World Cup Quarter-Final and it can be expected to be a mismatch. Or so one thinks. The issue is that in a knock out game like this, it will also be difficult for a top side to feel the pressure in the lead up.

And given the way the two sides have played, Pakistan is a top side in the competition, worthy of going through to the semi-finals.

West Indies can spring a surprise though. The reason for that has to be the presence of some of the biggest hitters of the ball in the game – Chris Gayle and Kieron Pollard. And this will allow the side to get going with the high-scoring if the side can bat first.

This will also mean that the Pakistani bowlers will be under immediate pressure to get the move on, that is, to ensure that the West Indians are nipped at every instance in the game.

If West Indies can bat first and score more than 275, the game could become interesting.

  • Give the Indian Cricket Team some time and patience

    0

There have been many questions asked of the Indian cricket team of the practice sessions that they seem to be missing. It is not a surprise that the side is giving up on the options practice sessions given that there have been many days between the two games and the heat would have started to pick up.

The cricket world cup game that India plays West Indies in will be played at Chennai, a city which is known for its heat. It will make much more sense to have only two or three such big net sessions with intensity rather than have more than them but without too much intensity – will not make too much sense.

It is obviously easy to criticise if the team does not do too well but the fans need to show some patience, some restraint in condemning a team which has done well in the recent times.

My sense is that while this team does not have it in them to win the tournament, they will get to at least the semi-finals.

  • Who will enter Cricket World Cup quarter-finals?

    0

There are five teams fighting out for four quarter-finals spot in the Group B of the Cricket World Cup. Of the five, South Africa have qualified for the last eight slots whereas the remaining three spots have yet to be decided.

If West Indies beat England, then England will be out and West Indies, India and Bangladesh will go through to the next round.

If England win that game, then West Indies will need to beat India to go through. If India lose then they will go through with England and West Indies, if Bangladesh lose to South Africa. However, if India lose and Bangladesh also win against South Africa, then India and England will tie for the fourth spot with seven points.

That will mean that only one of the two teams will go through. The side with the better net run-rate, which currently belongs to India.

If India beat West Indies, and South Africa beat Bangladesh, then India and England will be through and Bangladesh and West Indies will need to look at net run-rates.
