  • Difficult to see India play Pakistan in the quarter-finals

    1

The business end of the Cricket World Cup is approaching and things could not be more hotch-potch.

What is surprising is that even on the third last day of the league stage, none of the top four standings are decided and it will only be tomorrow when South Africa beat Bangladesh will they go to the top of the group.

Apart from that, Australia will need to beat Pakistan in the other group to go to the top of their group which will mean that the two sides, Australia and South Africa will not face each other in the quarter-finals or the semi-finals.

On the other hand, if Pakistan beat Australia, there will be dependence on the result of the game between New Zealand and Sri Lanka.

For those who are hoping for an India-Pakistan game in the quarter-finals, the chances are very low unless a string of results can go their way.

  • Who will enter Cricket World Cup quarter-finals?

    0

There are five teams fighting out for four quarter-finals spot in the Group B of the Cricket World Cup. Of the five, South Africa have qualified for the last eight slots whereas the remaining three spots have yet to be decided.

If West Indies beat England, then England will be out and West Indies, India and Bangladesh will go through to the next round.

If England win that game, then West Indies will need to beat India to go through. If India lose then they will go through with England and West Indies, if Bangladesh lose to South Africa. However, if India lose and Bangladesh also win against South Africa, then India and England will tie for the fourth spot with seven points.

That will mean that only one of the two teams will go through. The side with the better net run-rate, which currently belongs to India.

If India beat West Indies, and South Africa beat Bangladesh, then India and England will be through and Bangladesh and West Indies will need to look at net run-rates.

  • Think you can predict who will go through from Group B?

    1

So here we are now in the Group B, with nothing to choose from. In fact, Ireland may miss out given that they not only need to win their game against South Africa but also maintain a good net run rate to hope for a qualification.

However there is nothing to choose from between the remaining five sides. Four of them will go through and apart from South Africa, to an extent, the rest of the sides may still struggle. The reason why I say South Africa have a good chance of going through is because they play Ireland and Bangladesh, not too strong an opposition.

Of the remaining, India have 7 from 5, West Indies have 6 from 4, England have 5 from 5 and Bangladesh, who are playing the Dutch even as I write this, are at 4 from 4. So, assuming that Bangladesh beat Netherlands and South Africa beat both Bangladesh and Ireland, it will boil down to the results of the last two games – India-West India and West Indies-England.

This will also help in giving out the order of which team ends where in the group.

  • Shocking display by the Indian team against South Africa

    0

It is hard to believe what happened during the Indian innings against South Africa. There have been collapses before but to lose nine wickets for 29 was stunning. Shocking!

One got the sense that the Indian team aimed for much more than they should have. Without gauging the pitch, they thought that they could go after the bowling in much as the same manner as the pair of Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag. That was the mistake.

Even if one were to look at Gautam Gambhir, he struggled in the game despite getting to the half century. The rest of the batsmen should have taken the cue from that and gone ahead and aimed accordingly.

Unfortunately, they did not. And yet, it was a surprise that the collapse wasn’t stopped after the initial bit of wickets. I mean, after Tendulkar, Gambhir and Pathan got out, wasn’t there a case for the batting to go slow after that? Over-confidence? Ego?

    Match Details

    • Man of the Match: Dale Steyn
    • Match Results: South Africa won by 3 wickets

Robin Peterson gave a thrilling shot in today’s match with his 16 runs off the final over to hand South Africa with a sizzling three-wicket victory against India in the Cricket World Cup played at VCA Stadium here on Saturday.

Chasing a modest 297 runs victory, Peterson made a sizzling shot (18 not out) that includes a six and two fours to edge the Proteas to victory with two balls to spare to recharge the home crowd.

Sachin Tendulkar was doing his job pretty well as he managed to secure 33 balls in his first half century which he finally nailed it in another 49 balls to sum up his final century. However, he soon caught by JP Duminy off the bowling of Morne Morkel on 101 as he managed to  covered his total 111runs (his 99th international century) – including eight fours and three sixes.

South Africa started carefully as they were losing the wicket at regular intervals – as Zaheer Khan grabbed skipper Graeme Smith so as Smith munched by Tendulkar when the total was 41.

In addition, Virender Sehwag delivered 73runs along with Gautam Gambhir who scored 69 for India that sums up a 267-1 before an unexpected wind shoot up by Dale Steyn’s 5-50 left India in great shape at 267-1 but their remaining nine wickets crashed for 29 runs to leave them 296 all out.

Moreover, Jacques Kallis made 69 whereas Hasim Amla scored 61 runs and finally  AB de Villiers cover –up his total 52 runs that gave a final total for South Africa to reach its target of 297 with two balls to spare.

India remains a top Group B with seven points from five games, followed by West Indies and South Africa, who have six points each from one fewer game. The top four teams in the two seven-team groups’ advance to the quarterfinals.

    Brief Scores:

India: 296 all out in 48.4 overs. (Sachin Tendulkar 111, Virender Sehwag 73, Gautam Gambhir 69; Dale Steyn 5/50).

South Africa: 300 for seven in 49.4 overs. (Jacques Kallis 69, Hashim Amla 61, A B deVilliers 52; Harbhajan Singh 3/53).

  • Now can England get to quarter-finals

    0

England’s performance in the Cricket World Cup defies belief. One, they have had a cracking game against India and then again against the South Africa. Chasing 339 for a win, they managed to tie the India game while they defended 171 against South Africa.

And then, there were the minnow games. They were stretched to the distance by Netherlands, lost to Ireland thanks to Kevin O’Brien and then went down to Bangladesh as well.

Clearly, things are not looking too right for them as they now need to win their last game against West Indies to habour hopes of getting to the next round.

The bowling needs to improve by leaps and bounds. It is evident that James Anderson is struggling for form and on Indian pitches will continue struggling given that there will not be any swing or seam. Anderson relies on the swing to get his wickets.

Then again, Graeme Swann needs to calm himself down instead of taking on the umpires verbally. He is their top bowler and it will not make sense for him to lose it – England lost control in the middle overs because of that.

  • Bowling edge will be the key in Cricket World Cup

    0

It is interesting to see that the teams which have done well so far in the Cricket World Cup tournament are the ones which have a good bowling line-up. and the teams which have not been able to do well are those which are struggling with it.

For example, the Aussies have won two in two, and they have shown how their pace bowling line-up can manage to do a job for the side. Pakistan have won three in three and it has been because of their pace and spin combination in the Cricket World Cup. Afridi’s 14 wickets help of course.

South Africa have two premier fast bowler apart from the unveiling of a third new spinner in Imran Tahir who is a wicket-taking option.

On the other, India and England have poor bowling attacks and that has translated into one tie for India and one tie and a loss for England. India will play Ireland in the next game and the Irish will look to take on the Indian bowling easily.
