  • Pakistan will be a tough team in the Cricket World Cup

    1

Pakistan will go into the Cricket World Cup with a lot of confidence. After a rather devilish previous year in international cricket, they beat New Zealand in the recently concluded ODI series 3-2 and what was more interesting to see was that the side looked united.

This was surprising given that there were captaincy issues, brought about by the PCB. The PCB refused to name the captain of the side till very late, making it difficult for the incumbent and the one could have taken up the role.

Shahid Afridi would have been a disgruntled man after this decision to not name him the skipper but he has handled this and his batting well. In the end, the captaincy did fall into his laps after the PCB had no option but to ask him to lead given that he had won his side the series.

My sense is that now, Pakistan will be a strong contender in the Cricket World Cup and any team taking them lightly should do that at their own risk.

  • Surprise that Pakistan have not named captain yet

    1

It is a surprise that the Pakistani selectors have named their 15-member side but have yet to name the captain for the side. In fact, they are the only side to not name a captain so far and this could go on to have a negative repercussion on the side.

What is interesting is that knowing the manner in which the PCB operates, there will be no explanations forthcoming either for the delay. Or at best, very frivolous ones.

The reason why this could take an ugly turn is that the two who are in running for the top spot would have had their own set of backers within the side. And so, even if either one of Shahid Afridi or Misbah ul Haq gets the top spot, it is bound to come with a lot of side issues.

Afridi’s issue has been multiple-fold. Not only will he have to lead the side to the Cricket World Cup where the expectations will be high, his form with the bat and the ball has been close to ordinary.
