  • India give indication of their Cricket World Cup squad

    1

India gave their first indication of what their squad for the Cricket World Cup could be when they named a full-strength squad for the ODIs for South Africa.

This will include the likes of Sachin tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag at the top three, Zaheer Khan to lead the bowling attack, apart from the likes of Suresh Raina, Virat Kohli and Yuvraj in the middle-order.

Yusuf Pathan also makes it to the squad, though it will be interesting to see how he plays on those hard, bouncy tracks where the ball will be banged into his chest, while the spinning department will consist of Harbhajan Singh, R Ashwin and rather surprisingly Piyush Chawla. That could meant that Ojha may not play in the Cricket World Cup either.

The pace bowling consists of Zaheer, Ashish Nehra and Praveen Kumar as expected, apart from Sreesanth and Munaf Patel, one of whom should make it to the World Cup as well.

  • Will Ponting captain Australia in the World Cup?

    0

It will be interesting to see who the captain will be for Australia in the 2011 edition of the World Cup. The reason one thinks it could get interesting is because of the fact that it looks highly likely that the side may end up losing the Ashes.

Now, if they do lose the Ashes, and the chances of that look bright, it will only mean that the side would have lost three Ashes under Ricky Ponting. The captain will be a disgruntled man and the faith that the team, selectors and the fans would have in him would erode gently.

This will mean that there is a good chance that the selectors may look around for the role.

Whether they will actually go on to give it to someone else needs to be seen given the importance of the tournament and the fact that Michael Clarke doesn’t seem too ready now. It could also mean that Ponting may have to retire from the game, something that most captains do in Australia.

The best part will come if the Aussies lose the WACA Test – which will mean they don’t win the Ashes for sure. The question then is whether he will give up on the captaincy then?

  • The senior players should have played the last couple of games against New Zealand

    0

The ODI series against New Zealand is fast turning out to be a farce. The competition is absent and it looks like the side has to merely turn up in the park and they will win.

The reason why this does not augur well for the side is that the competition in the Cricket World Cup is not going to be the same. It will be far tougher and will need the side to be at their 100% all the time. And the problem is that for a long time, India’s best team hasn’t played in the ODIs.

This could cause issues to those who have been resting and will suddenly face the difficult pitches of South Africa. There will be bounce, pace and what not there and to expect them to bat well all of a sudden would be difficult.

The morale could get shattered and that could push the side back in their preparation for the Cricket World Cup.

Think India can win the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011?

  • Elephant chosen as mascot for 2011 World Cup

    1

The 1982 Asian Game Mascot “Appu”, the elephant, will now be plying the same role as a lucky Mascot for the ICC World Cup 2011.

The Cricket World Cup Mascot – “Appu” was unveiled at the function which took place in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on April 2 and the World cup Organizers states that “that cricket fans based in the host nations would be able to participate in a contest to name the mascot.

However, the main objective to come up with the New Mascot for CWC is to crystallise the feelings of cricket lover especially in the major event like World Cup Match.

Tournament director Ratnakar Shetty stated that “It also emphasises the enthusiasm of youth both in general and for Cricket itself, especially on the sub-continent with its massive and dedicated following. He’s stylised to give an instantly recognisable graphic strength so that with exposure his bold lines and strong colouring will instantly create a friendly face for the CWC,” said in the media release.

The details pertaining to the consumer contest (address on which to send entries and deadline) will be intimated in due course, he added.
