Man of the Match: Yuvraj Singh

India smashed the defending champions Australia with a thrilling five-wicket victory and sealed their name into the semi finals to meet arch rivals Pakistan in Mohali.

Chasing a modest 260 runs target, Yuvraj Singh delivered his blistering batting performance along with the partner Suresh Raina gave India a much deserving win against Australia in the 2nd quarter final match of ICC World Cup Cricket 2011 held at Ahmadabad here on Thurshday.

Man of the match – Yuvraj Sing delivered (57 not out) which includes eight fours along with the winning boundary, in his 65-ball whereas Raina hit a six and couple of fours in his 28-balls.

After winning the toss, Australia started off their batting first and posted a total run score of about 260 for 6 in 50 overs. However, openers Shane Watson and Brad Haddin  gave Australia a steady start against India. The duo added 40 runs for the first wicket.

Chasing a modest 261-run target, India started off on a good note, but Sehwag (15) had to leave the ground in the ninth over. Though, Sehwag and Tendulkar kept their spirit alive as they both added 44 runs for the first wicket.

Initially, it was quite difficult for India to stay on the ground as they lost Dhoni, Gambhir and Kohli in quick succession. Captain Dhoni was taken by a Lee delivery as he was  trying to hit the ball past point while Gambhir got out while  trying to take a single off Hussey’s ball whereas Kohli was caught by Clarke at midwicket.

However, Sachin delivered a superb half century and added yet another feather to his cap. Though, this is Sachin’s 18000 runs in ODIs as he hits seven solid boundaries in today’s match maintaining an average run rate of about 5 per over.

India will now meet with arch rivals Pakistan for the Semi Finals at Mohali which is going to be held in Chandigarh on 30th March.

    Teams:
India: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (c), Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, R Ashwin, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Munaf Patel

Australia: Ricky Ponting (c), Brad Haddin, Shane Watson, Michael Clarke, Cameron White, Mike Hussey, David Hussey, Mitchell Johnson, Brett Lee, Jason Krejza, Shaun Tait.

  • Pressure will be on India at home

    1

India will play Australia in the second quarter-finals of the ICC World Cup 2011 and the game will be played at Motera. One can expect it to be an exciting game and there cannot be too much doubt that of all the four quarter-finals, this promises to be the most closely fought.

India have had an up and down tournament but then, so have the Aussies. Both the sides have not been convincing against the minnows and have lost a game each while struggling with their middle order batting. That has also meant that the sides have much to think about before going into the next round game.

Of course the Indians will be happy with the fact that the side is playing at home but the pressure would be immense. In a normal game, the Indians would have thought that the side will have the advantage playing home but these are not normal situations. A loss here and the side would have taken the home team out at home.

So pressure will be on India!

  • Difficult to see India play Pakistan in the quarter-finals

    1

The business end of the Cricket World Cup is approaching and things could not be more hotch-potch.

What is surprising is that even on the third last day of the league stage, none of the top four standings are decided and it will only be tomorrow when South Africa beat Bangladesh will they go to the top of the group.

Apart from that, Australia will need to beat Pakistan in the other group to go to the top of their group which will mean that the two sides, Australia and South Africa will not face each other in the quarter-finals or the semi-finals.

On the other hand, if Pakistan beat Australia, there will be dependence on the result of the game between New Zealand and Sri Lanka.

For those who are hoping for an India-Pakistan game in the quarter-finals, the chances are very low unless a string of results can go their way.

  • How does Group A of Cricket World Cup lie?

    1

The best part about the Cricket World Cup 2011 – Group A is that the four teams have already qualified for the quarter-finals. There were never any issues with it and so far, there were no upsets either. However, what remains to be seen is which team will stand at which position.

There are two meaningful games to go between Australia and Pakistan and then between New Zealand and Pakistan.

If Australia win they will top the group irrespective of what happens in the other game. Similarly if New Zealand beat Pakistan then they could top the group as well if Pakistan beat Australia.

Sri Lanka, even if they beat New Zealand, cannot top the group. Nor can they come on the third position.

What this will mean is that with the Aussies having a good chance of going through to the next round at the top of the table, it could mean that they could play the team placed fourth in Group B.

  • Australia collapse again, lose second game to South Africa

    1

Australia lose another warm-up game in this Cricket World Cup 2011 and this time it is to South Africa. Some may say that it is only a warm-up. Unfortunately, that argument would have held true had the side fought hard, matched the South Africans and then gone down.

Instead, there were huge issues to look at for South Africa.

One was their batting. While batting collapses are common in this day and age of aggressive cricket, they have gone down like a pack of cards on two successive occasions – against India they lost nine wickets for 58 and now, eight for 89.

This was followed by their bowling. Only two days ago, India had bowled Australia out in the second innings under lights. This time around, Australia managed just one wicket – the other two were retired outs to allow practice for the other batsmen.

Even that wicket was a run-out. The bowling, to me, seems overly dependent on Brett Lee. His ten overs aside, things will look difficult for the side if they have to depend a lowish total and the confidence would be sapping as well.

  • Bowling attack a question-mark for India

    1

It is a question that would have passed through many people’s minds. While the batting is more or less decided, who will be the final four in the Indian bowling attack.

Unfortunately, only Harbhajan Singh makes it to the starting eleven a bowler without question-marks. Zaheer would have made it as well, but there are reports that he has a groin strain and it remain to be seen whether the side will actually risk him for the first game.

That means two of Ashish Nehra, Munaf Patel and Sreesanth should play. My guess is that Nehra will make it to the eleven along with Sreesanth. Munaf has bowled well but needs support from the pitch.

That means that there is one spot open for the fourth bowler – and one of R Ashwin or Piyush Chawla will make it through. Till about recently, Chawla was not even in contention and would have probably not played a single game. Now, with his performance against Australia, it makes things interesting.

    Who are your four bowlers?

  • India take on Australia in warm-ups

    0

It is only seven days to go and the Cricket World Cup warm-ups kick off from Saturday. Interestingly, there are five games on the first day while the second day will see India take on Australia – a cracker of a game.
Fortunately for the Indian fan, the India-Australia will be shown live on television and should make for an interesting viewing given the way the two sides are stacked up.

There have been two sides in the world which have played good ODI cricket in the country – Australia and South Africa. The last time South Africa were in India, they had lost 2-1 while Australia were beaten 1-0.

This game, for the sheer competiveness between the two sides will be exciting. But it will also be interesting to see how the injured few stack up – Sehwag, Tendukar, Gambhir, Ponting, Haddin – and whether they can get rid of the rust in their system.

Doug Bollinger will be the bowler to watch out for.
