Kevin O’Brien smashes fastest Cricket World Cup ton as Ireland stun England by 3 wickets
Scorecard :
Result: Ireland won by 3 wickets
Man of the match: K Brien
Looking at the way thing have gone in the Cricket World Cup so far, it looks like the strategy set by the teams looks almost set.
For one, the teams have decided to start slowly. Take it over by over to begin with before getting to accelerate.
And the second tactic is to get the spinners early, if not get them to open the bowling. The biggest surprise was always South Africa’s decision to go ahead with three frontline spinners in the game against West Indies.
It is clear that India’s strategy to go in with three medium pace bowlers was a shocker. They should have, and should still, for the rest of the games, go in with at least two frontline spin bowlers and the rest of the spinners in the form of the part-timers.
One can be rest assured that the side will take in the second spinner in the next game against England. the question, though is, whether England will play a second one?
It was interesting to see MS Dhoni go into a game in the sub-continent with three seam bowlers. Especially on one that looked like it had had something in it for the spin bowlers.
But then, Dhoni is a different person, a different captain. He would have known that the teams batting second at Mirpur have won a lot of their games, making it difficult to bowl second under dew.
Knowing that spinners find it difficult to bowl in such conditions and that Bangladesh play spin very well – or at least better than pace – Dhoni went in with a decision that seemed to have surprised everyone.
It wouldn’t be a surprise to see the captain changing things around if the side was playing the likes of England or South Africa back home. They would know that the non-Asian teams will find it difficult to play the spin bowlers and despite the dew, the Indians would find it easier to bowl against them.
Interesting tactics!
India crushed Bangladesh by 87 runs in the opening match of the cricket World Cup at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Saturday.
Virendra Sehwag gave a superb performance covering a 175 off 140 balls whereas Virat Kohli, the rising star of the day acquired 100 unbeatable runs to keep the glowing smile on Team India’s fan alive.
Talking about Bangladeshi’s team, Tamim Iqbal made 70 whereas skipper Shakib Al Hasan gave a plucky 55 off 50 balls along with wicket-keeper Mushfiqur Rahim who scores 25 sums up 46 for the fourth wicket before departing in search of quick runs. These were the notable performance in their squad
Though, India’s Munaf Patel also left no stone unturned to reach the ball figures of 4/48 while Zaheer Khan freezes two wickets in 41 runs.
Sachin Tendulkar too starts on a promising note but couldn’t keep the momentum of the game as he got dismissed through entrant skipper Shakib Al Hasan in the eleventh over. The master blaster hit four boundaries in his 29-ball innings.
Man-of-the-Match: Mahendra Singh Sehwag, (This is Sehwag’s highest one-day score off 140 balls, leading India to 370-4)
Brief Scores:
India: 370 for four in 50 overs. (Virender Sehwag 175, Virat Kohli 100 not out; Mahmudullah 1/49).
Bangladesh: 283 for nine in 50 overs (Tamim Iqbal 70, Shakib Al Hasan 55; Munaf Patel 4/48, Zaheer Khan 2/41).
Team of the Day: – India made a massive 370/4 as they restricted the Bangladeshi’s host to 283/9.
Note: India will now take on England in their second Group-B league match in Bangalore on February 27.
