  • Bell run-out sparks controversy

    0

The Ian Bell run-out controversy will be one that will be remembered for time to come and the reason for it is simple. For long, the Indians have been expected to accept decisions on the grounds of sportsmanship even as the team at the other end, has made merry.

It had happened on the tour of Australia in the Sydney Test when one decision after another went against the Indian team and they could only helplessly look on.

There was a stumping decision that went against India, and there was a caught behind that also went against India before Ganguly was given out caught off one bounce.

So, I don’t understand what was MS Dhoni expecting to gain out of the decision to recall Ian Bell. If winning a sportsmanship award was the issue, he can easily do that in the IPL’s Fairplay award but with a number one ranking at stake, it was something that he should have kept in mind.

Besides, Bell was clearly out and it should have remained that way.

  • IPL tickets should be priced better

    0

The fifth edition of the Indian Premier League will be played in 2012 and you can find all the information related to the IPL tickets on this site. You can be a Mumbai Indians fan or follow the Delhi Daredevils, you can root for the Knight Riders or will Chennai for a win, you can get all your IPL tickets online here.

The Indian Premier League will continue to have 10 teams in the 2012 edition of the tournament, unless the BCCI goes to court against one or more of the franchises as they had in the previous edition. This will mean that there is a good chance that each side will continue to play 14 games apiece and that will allow the fans a chance to watch seven games at home.

Chennai Super Kings were the winner of the of the 2011 edition of the IPL and it had come as no surprise to many of its fans given the kind of cricket they had played throughout the tournament. They had selected the right players and by the time they entered the last phase of the IPL, they looked like they were the form team and good to go through.

On the other hand, the Mumbai Indians fell apart and for a side that looked good to challenge the Super Kings, they failed to get to the final. Thankfully for them, the Mumbai Indians, despite their loss to the Royal Challengers Bangalore, managed to qualify for the Champions League T20.

  • Difficult to call favourites between India and Sri Lanka

    3

So it is that time of the year when India take on Sri Lanka in the final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011. The two teams have quite clearly been the best in the business and that should hold them in a good stead for this important game.

India will have the advantage in the sense that they are playing at home. Sri Lanka’s record in India has been anything but exciting. They have barely managed to win any game here and off the last 39 matches here, they have won only 11.

India will look to play S Sreesanth in place of Ashish Nehra who is injured whereas the batting of Angelo Mathews will be missed by the Lankans and he will be replaced by Thisara Perera.

Between the two teams it is going to be very difficult to choose the winner, but one thing is certain that the team batting first will have a huge advantage going into the game.

That said they will need to score at least 250 in the first innings.

  • Two Asian teams to contest World Cup final for first time

    4

It is interesting to note that the three teams who are left in the fray for a Cricket World Cup win are the three teams which lost in the final of the previous three Cricket World Cup tournaments. Sri Lanka went down in 2007, India in 2003 whereas Pakistan were ousted in 1999.

So, one of the runner-up will definitely go on to win the tournament this time.

More interestingly, all the three teams have also won the World Cup once, and are Asian teams. This is the first time that there will be two Asian teams which will contest the final of a World Cup, which is something good for them.

If India go through to the final, it will be a revenge game for them against Sri Lanka after having lost to them and crashed out in 2007. Secondly, it could also be a repeat of what happened in the 1996 Cricket World Cup, where India beat Pakistan in a high-voltage game before succumbing to Sri Lanka in a low-profile match.

  • Sri Lankan bowling wins them semi-final against New Zealand

    2

New Zealand fought hard but in the end, were no match for the firepower of Sri Lanka. The batting was much better but in the end, it was the Sri Lankan bowling that made all the difference.

The problem that the Kiwis faced from the word go on a sticky Colombo track was that they could not score quickly enough. Not for a moment did it look like they would get to 260 an even towards the end of the innings when the acceleration could have come in, Sri Lanka bowled really well.

So, now it is two games in a row that Lankan have bowled much better than any other side in the competition. They will be facing India or Pakistan in the cricket world cup final and the sense that one gets is that they will prefer the batting of Pakistan – which has struggled in the competition so far.

However, for that, Pakistan will first need to beat India in the semi-final of the tournament and that could be the difficult part.

  • Time for Ponting to give up batting as well

    0

Ricky Ponting has said that one of the reasons why he has quit his captaincy is because he would like to focus on his batting. He has also said that he will look to regain his touch in the same manner as Tendulkar had in the last couple of years.

Dear Ponting, to regain that touch, you need to acknowledge much before hand that you were not in touch. Not for a minute through all the last couple of years did you do that – how can you expect to acknowledge that?

Secondly, the reason why Tendulkar was able to get back to touch was because he overcame his injuries. Do you have any injuries that you need to get fit from? If not, what is the plan of action? Do you think that you can try and get back to form even as your side struggles to blood new guys?

It is time to move on mate, get into the commentary box or even get going as a coach or something. Enough batting done.

  • Sri Lanka will be favourites to enter final

    2

It was not a surprise to see Sri Lanka play the manner in which they did in the cricket world cup game against the English side. While many would have hoped for a surprise in the game much like how South Africa had gone down, Sri Lanka were playing at home.

It was interesting to see how the English side batted in the last ten overs. It was almost a case of being too cautious and that is where they lost the game to the opponents.

What the New Zealand side will need to do to be able to get the better of their opponents in the semi-final is to bat much better than they have, or England did in that quarter-final. There cannot be too much doubt that a target of 250-260 will be difficult to chase and the asking rate can climb up with a few good overs.

To get to that total, New Zealand will need not only a strong start but also a good battle against the spinners.
