  • Elephant chosen as mascot for 2011 World Cup

    1

The 1982 Asian Game Mascot “Appu”, the elephant, will now be plying the same role as a lucky Mascot for the ICC World Cup 2011.

The Cricket World Cup Mascot – “Appu” was unveiled at the function which took place in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on April 2 and the World cup Organizers states that “that cricket fans based in the host nations would be able to participate in a contest to name the mascot.

However, the main objective to come up with the New Mascot for CWC is to crystallise the feelings of cricket lover especially in the major event like World Cup Match.

Tournament director Ratnakar Shetty stated that “It also emphasises the enthusiasm of youth both in general and for Cricket itself, especially on the sub-continent with its massive and dedicated following. He’s stylised to give an instantly recognisable graphic strength so that with exposure his bold lines and strong colouring will instantly create a friendly face for the CWC,” said in the media release.

The details pertaining to the consumer contest (address on which to send entries and deadline) will be intimated in due course, he added.

So, the audiences can now start booking their tickets for the World Cup online. No, not the soccer world cup which starts within a week from now, the cricket world cup which will begin from February, next year.

The organising committee of the World Cup has released 5% of the tickets for the World Cup, which is around 100,000 tickets for the tournament. These tickets include all the 13 venues on display and have been priced pretty economically, given that the previous tournament had seen empty stadiums in the West Indies.

One of the stands in a ground in Sri Lanka, Hambantota, has tickets priced at INR 10, which is probably a grass embankment without a stand.

The President-in-waiting of the ICC, and former BCCI President, Sharad Pawar, said, “The prices confirm the promise we made that the tickets would be affordable and accessible.”

The tickets can be purchased from http://www.icccwc2011.kyazoonga.com/tickets/index, and the same will be delivered not before November or December. However, given the craze for the tournament, there is a good chance that the tickets may be lapped up pretty quickly by the audiences. So, do book them now!
